I have just started my PhD (2014) which will focus on assessing the behavioural responses of breeding Cape and Northern gannets to varying environmental conditions. My research uses a combination of field-based and automated methods, largely through the deployment of VHF and GPS tags. This will be correlated to data from acoustic surveys around the study sites that will assess prey availability and composition. My three study sites are (i) Bird Island, Algoa Bay, and (ii) Malgas Island, Saldanha Bay, both in South Africa, and (iii) Lofoten Islands in Norway.
